Whether you are a beginner guitar enthusiast or someone with a little musical know how guitar lessons are key to perfecting your craft. Busier schedules and longer working hours present difficulty in making time to meet with a private guitar teacher.

Between work, family, friends and school fitting in time for practicing a new skill has become more of a challenge. Online courses for education have become increasingly popular over the last decade for this very reason, and for an aspiring guitar player this might be the only way to squeeze in time to learn.

Free Online Guitar Lessons

The internet offers a wealth of online guitar tutorials, a great deal of which are free. Are the free online guitar lessons just as good as lessons you would pay for? That may be a matter of personal opinion but the old adage “you get what you pay for” speaks volumes about free online guitar lessons.

The average free online guitar lesson begins with the instructor teaching you how to hold a guitar. Next they explain the strings and the frets, very quickly. Then they will typically dive right in to showing you how to strum a few chords. So far so good, but most of them will not teach you a thing about musical theory, notes, chords and other concepts that you should know.

These lessons are fine if you want to learn enough guitar to memorize a few songs to play for a family gathering, but you will probably never jam along with a song on the radio at will if this is how you were taught.

These courses teach guitar like a parrot is “taught” to speak. Parrots learn to talk by mimicking human voice. Parrots do not understand what they are saying when they talk, they simply copy the sounds that they hear. This is not how you want to learn to play guitar.

Play as You Practice

Let there be no confusion, I am not saying free online guitar lessons are no good. I have come across several free guitar lessons that were very informative from well meaning musicians trying to help out their fellow man. My problem with these courses is that they start out teaching you a few basics and jump right into playing.

It is true that guitar is not a spectators sport so it is good to promote playing while learning, but they skipped some elementary steps and dove in a little too quickly for your average beginner. For someone with any prior guitar knowledge this would be no problem at all, but for an absolute beginner, this can be very confusing, frustrating and damaging to your guitar playing ability.

How Do You Learn?

So how do you find a solid free online guitar lesson that will help you achieve your guitar goals? Do your research. Watch several free online videos to get a feel for the teachers, their methods, their curriculum and your ability to follow what they are saying. We all learn differently and prefer certain teaching styles. Some people learn better visually, seeing what they are learning helps solidify the information in their brain. Others are perfectly content to read a book and let their mind fill in the blanks.

For the guitar in particular, learning visually is a requirement. Concepts that would take you less than five minutes to learn with a visual example would require a teacher to write a whole book on the subject. In this aspect, free online guitar lessons are all good in the sense that they all provide video.

Do Free Online Guitar Lessons Work?

In all honesty, my best advice is to take free courses with a grain of salt. There is a great deal of guitar instruction in most of these lessons, but they usually jump around a bit skipping over key details. This can be confusing and frustrating for the absolute beginner.

The worlds greatest musician may not be the worlds greatest teacher. I would suggest eventually finding an instructor or course that you have to pay for, and using the free lessons as practice or review of what you have learned. This is a great way to track your progress.

Try TABS Guitar

You do not necessarily have to be a whiz with music notation and theory to play the guitar. There are other methods such as TABs guitar. TABs will get you playing the guitar rather quickly, but for the beginner that would like to be considered an advanced player eventually, even a small amount of education on standard music notation and musical theory makes a world of difference. This more well rounded approach to playing guitar is better suited to playing and writing your own music.

If you learn to play guitar with an inexperienced guitar teacher who does not have a good grasp of teaching the guitar you will be fighting an uphill struggle that most novice guitar players lose. You will most likely end up feeling like you are doing something wrong when in all actuality your lessons were poorly constructed and less than user friendly.

Learning to play guitar may not be rocket science, but it is a new skill that requires lots of practice and lots of patience. You will encounter enough frustrations learning from a great teacher, do not set yourself up for added difficulty. The lack of lesson structure and choppy content could be the breaking point from you becoming a great guitar player, or quitting from sheer aggravation.

Did you know that 65% of beginning guitar students quit within 2 months? Why? Lessons or a teacher that didn’t work for them. Find the best guitar lessons that will work for you with a video guitar lessons review.

Many adults want to learn to play the guitar, and guitar lessons for adults are in great demand. However, many adult learners have trouble finding a guitar teacher, or find that conventional guitar lessons don’t suit their needs. This article looks at the options for adult guitar lessons.

There are two basic routes available – private lessons with a teacher, or teaching yourself. Let’s take a look at the pros and cons of these choices for adult learners.

Lessons With a Teacher

1. Private guitar lessons for adults

Children who are learning to play the guitar often have private lessons with a guitar teacher. This isn’t always the obvious solution for adult learners however, for a number of reasons. For one thing, adults typically respond to different teaching methods than children. Some teachers may be less experienced or comfortable with adult students, and in some locations it can be hard to find teachers of the style of music you’re interested in. Even after finding a good teacher, adult students often find it difficult to attend lessons regularly. Budget can be an issue too, especially if you’re going every week.

On the plus side, a teacher will demonstrate the correct technique, and will provide encouragement during tough times. If want private lessons, ensure that the teacher is happy to teach adult students, and request references from previous/existing students. Don’t be afraid to interview several teachers if you can – most will offer a no-obligation consultation to new students.

2. Group guitar lessons

You can also learn guitar as part of a group. Group lessons may be offered by private teachers, or by local colleges, music stores etc. These can be lots of fun, and the cost is usually lower than one-on-one private lessons too.

However, some people don’t want to learn in a group situation, and these lessons often seem to be targeted at young men; if you’re not part of that demographic, you might not feel comfortable. If group lessons appeal to you, make sure that they’re teaching the kind of music you want to play.

Teaching yourself to play guitar

1. Tutor books/DVDs

Many adults choose to teach themselves to play, especially those learning pop and rock styles (as opposed to classical guitar). Traditionally, people have taught themselves using a tutor book. Today these books often include CDs, so you can hear how the music/exercises should sound, and sometimes DVDs too, showing you the correct hand positions, posture etc.

Most guitar instruction books are written for a mature audience, so adults often feel comfortable learning guitar in this way. They’re also much cheaper than private lessons, and you can go at your own pace, with no need for travelling or fitting in with someone else’s schedule.

The downside of learning this way is that it can be difficult to figure out exactly what you should be doing from written instruction and photos alone. Your motivation may also wane, especially if the book teaches music you don’t like much.

2. Online guitar lessons

Today, many people turn to the internet for adult guitar lessons, for good reason. As well as being economical and allowing you to learn at your own pace, quality online guitar lessons usually combine written, video, audio and software content, making them more effective and fun to use than books. They’re flexible too – e.g., you can play a video over and over again. Internet lessons cover many musical styles, and can be downloaded and/or viewed online, so you can access them from anywhere. And online guitar lessons are usually created with the needs of the adult learner in mind.

You do have to select your instruction carefully though. Since anyone can put up a website and call themselves a guitar expert, the quality varies, so ensure that you choose lessons from a competent instructor.

Jamorama is a top quality, professionally produced course of online guitar lessons for adults, and is perfect for anyone wanting to learn to play rhythm or lead guitar. Find out more about the course at http://learntheguitaronline.info or check out my review of Jamorama to read more about my experience with it.

Sam Marks is a guitarist who enjoys writing about music and sharing helpful, high quality resources, and may receive compensation as a result of making these recommendations.

Online Guitar Lessons have become the new way of learning the guitar for both beginners and advanced guitar players.

When I first started playing the guitar over five years ago, guitar lessons online were sprouting up all over the place. The problem was that there were very few quality online lessons that allowed for rapid advancement.

While there were many reasons for this, technology has moved quickly and lessons online now offer audios, videos, jam tracks and guitar lessons on DVD that allow for much faster advancements than the traditional sit down guitar lessons.

Where it once took the average person six months to reach an advanced level, there are now many guitar instructions that allow you to reach that same level within one to two months. In fact if you choose the correct lessons you should be playing your favorite songs within a few days.

That though is the trick, finding the best guitar lessons. When I was first looking for beginner guitar lessons over five years ago, I had purchased several lessons that were very difficult and left me frustrated. After a few days the guitar was in the closet and I figured I would never reach the level I desired.

Now don’t get me wrong, learning the guitar takes practice, but what a difference when you have the proper tools in place including lessons from instructors who have the experience and tools that allow for very fast advancement.

The first two lessons I purchased involved weeks of learning music, notes, chords, bar chords, frets and so much more without playing a single note. Once I had the right lessons, I was using what I had learned that day to play the songs that I enjoyed. In fact the correct lessons actually allowed me to play along with my favorite artist with jam tracks within a few days.

I learned very quickly that the lessons you choose will not only dictate how quickly you will be playing advanced songs with the guitar, but many times if you will even continue, or become frustrated due to the lack of tools.

There are several factors to consider when choosing the correct guitar lessons:

* What experience does the instructor have?
* Are the lessons nothing more than a PDF?
* Are there videos available?
* Are there pictures?
* Are there Audios?
* Are there Jam Tracks to record your progress and play along with your favorite artist

For myself and others who have the desire to quickly advance their level of guitar playing, the lessons you choose will dictate how quickly you will reach the level you desire.

By looking at the different online guitar lessons, the experience of the instructor and exactly what is offered through their lessons, you can quickly advance with the guitar and be playing at a level that can give you a tremendous feeling of accomplishment.

Jim Farlow started an online guitar review panel in 2003 after purchasing several ineffective online guitar lessons. The goal of his review blog is to guide those seeking professional guitar lessons towards the proper instructors and tools. This will allow for very fast advancement with the guitar and the tremendous satisfaction that comes with playing the songs you enjoy.

With today’s technology, finding good guitar lessons is quite easy and simple. Actually, thinking about it finding solutions to most of our problems is much easier today. Whenever we have something that we need a solution to, or an interesting topic that we would like more information on, we simply type our question into a search engine, and within.025 seconds you have a list of choices. Yes, the internet has some awesome benefits. Looking at the search results then presents you with yet another dilemma, where do we go from here?

Searching for guitar lessons, you would have many different websites to choose from. It then becomes a real challenge to determine which guitar lesson or guitar course you should purchase. Should we purchase the physical product or the digital product? Should we learn from an actual teacher or someone who can really play the guitar well, but maybe isn’t a great instructor. How do we make the decision?

Take A Quick Survey Of Your Learning Style

Before you go out and buy guitar lessons, briefly think about how you learn new things? Do learn better from listening to a lecture, or an audio recording? Or do you require actual hands on experience, actually doing the activity to learn. Or maybe you can visually watch something over and over and learn that way. Most of us have all of these different learning styles but one generally tends to dominate most of our learning mode. Different components to learning use a different learning style for different activities learn should be a factor in which type of guitar lesson or course you should choose.

A guitar course that offers guitar lessons using a variety of mediums for instruction, such as video, audio, pictures and text are often the best choices, especially if you are just beginning. It will make it easier for you to understand what they are teaching, and you feel like you are better able to make consistent progress on learning the guitar.

Fortunately most online computer based guitar courses are becoming more open, and actually give you access to several free guitar lessons to try before making a monetary commitment. It is strongly recommend that you try this option before buying any one single course, as it allows you to determine how well the course teaching style and material presentation will work for you. If you don’t like having to be in front of a computer to practice your guitar lessons for the day, then you may think about a different option.

The Single verses Multiple Guitar Lesson Instructors

Each guitar lesson instructor will have a different style, background, experience, ideas, and approach in which they feel their guitar prowess should be transferred to their students. There are some guitar courses in which the same instructor teaches all of the lessons. There are also courses in which each lesson or genre is actually taught to the students by different instructors. Both of these teaching styles can be beneficial depending upon your current level of guitar playing.

The benefit to having one person teach you guitar lessons, allows you to have consistency in your learning. Getting used to only one instructor’s style and approach in the beginning, may present for quicker learning, and more consistent results. If you are just beginning your guitar learning experience finding a single instructor guitar course is most likely the best approach.

Although if you already have some guitar playing experience and are looking to advance your skill level and learn several new genres and styles, then maybe having multiple instructors may be more beneficial. The multiple instructor approach allows you study many different styles giving you a larger variety of playing options to choose from. If you’re searching for ways to expand beyond your beginning skills to an intermediate or even advanced level, then you may consider the multiple instructor approach to guitar lesson instruction.

When teaching yourself to play the guitar and are searching for a guitar instruction course 1) consider your personal learning style, 2) the medium in which the course material is presented and 3) the benefits of having one verses multiple instructors. Remember when learning something new, consistency and persistence are major keys to reaching your guitar playing goals.

At Go to GuitarsandGuitarLessons.com, you can find more easy to read information regarding guitar lesson and guitar course summaries. You’ll also find some awesome prices on the most popular brands of acoustic and electric guitars. Just a few of the name brands you’ll notice are Fender, Gibson, Ibanez, Yamaha, B.C. Rich, Dean, Epiphone, Peavey as well as many, many others.

The first Speed Kills DVD begins with Michael Angelo Batio playing a lightening fast but interesting electric guitar solo. After just a few minutes of watching I started to laugh out loud. You know, the kind of involuntary, puzzled laugh that bursts forth when a magician does something truly unexpected and unbelievable.

I have never seen a guitar played that fast. It almost looked fake. Perhaps what is more amazing, however, is that Michael can actually teach these seemingly impossible techniques to us mere mortal guitarists.

If you have ever desired to play lead electric guitar solos for rock, hard rock, metal, blues, pop, country or improvisational jazz then please pay close attention to this review.

The Purpose

According to the author, Michael Angelo Batio, Speed Kills was created to be the ultimate guitar lesson on speed picking technique. This course concentrates on speed techniques that challenge even the most advanced players. Even so, an intermediate guitarists can begin working with this and expect incredible gains.

About The Author, Michael Angelo Batio

Mr. Batio has been referred to as the fastest guitar player on the planet. After watching his video guitar lessons I absolutely believe it. And as if that was not amazing enough, he actually taught himself to play a custom built, combination of a right-handed and a left-handed electric guitar both at the exact same time. Seeing this alone was worth the price of the first DVD.

Guitar One Magazine chose Michael Angelo Batio as the Number 1 Shredder of All Time.

Batio has created the ultimate face-melting instructional DVD says Guitar World Magazine.

One of the elements that make Batio such a master guitarist is his depth of knowledge about music theory and classical music. He has even produced a DVD called 25 Jazz Progressions.

Who Will Benefit Most From Speed Kills?

This guitar lesson course is ideally suited to intermediate guitarists that wish to improve their lead guitar skills and techniques with an emphasis on speed. Having a thorough knowledge of music theory is not necessary but having some basic understanding of chords, scale types and modalities would be useful.

An excellent preparation for this course would be the 6 part Metal Method Complete Video Guitar Lesson DVDs by Doug Marks.

Is This Speed Guitar Course For Acoustic Or Electric Guitar Players?

Electric guitar.

The Lesson Format

Each lesson begins with a brief talk by the author explaining the upcoming exercises. This is followed by a fast then slow video close-up demonstration and a clever play-along animated tab with sound.

The Contents of the Speed kills Lead Guitar Lessons DVDs

- A protective organizer case for the DVDs

- Each DVD contains a printable PDF file with chapter lists and tabs for each lesson.

DVD #1 Speed Kills, This DVD introduces advanced picking techniques with a No Boundaries performance, tuning, tremolo picking, preventing hand injuries, alternative picking, hammer-on and Pull-off, arpeggio madness, diminished licks plus a discussion and solo performance of the Double Guitar.

DVD #2 Speed Kills 2, This DVD contains more advanced techniques plus developing essential warm-Up skills. 28 lesson groups with 69 exercises.

DVD #3 Speed Kills 3, This DVD contains the most challenging techniques plus advanced Shredding.

DVD #4 Speed Lives, Michael step by step teaches the song, No Boundaries. In the last section of this DVD you play the lead part over his rhythm accompaniment.

The Negatives

It was annoying to print out the support materials for each lesson even though it only took about 15 minutes for all four DVDs. I would prefer to receive them all pre-printed and bound. However, this would substantially increase the cost of the course so I suppose that it is actually a reasonable compromise.

The course would benefit from more topical details on the video titles. It can be a little confusing if you wish to return to a specific lesson.

The Positives

Receiving advanced guitar instruction from a true guitar virtuoso is a rare opportunity. Michael speaks and plays with confidence and humor. He is down to earth, articulate and easy to follow which is somewhat unusual for someone of his extreme playing ability.

The clarity of the video production is excellent. The close ups and angles of the shots are extremely clear and understandable. I am glad that this course is not made up of just video snippets but instead offers the richer learning experience that can only come from wall to wall video.

This course is incredibly affordable not only because the pricing is lower than most programs of this advanced level but, also because you can purchase just one DVD at a time with no obligation to buy any more.

Support

The Metal Method Company offers email, phone, mail and a student forum to answer questions. They also offer a fairly exhaustive frequently asked questions section at their website for quick reference.

The Price Analysis

Metal Methods Speed Kills Video Guitar Lessons contains the equivalent of about 6 months to over a year worth of guitar lessons if you were to space them out as if you were taking weekly lessons from a local guitar instructor.

A local instructor will typically charge anywhere from $20 to $50 per lesson. Your minimum cost at only $20 per lesson for 6 months would be at least $520.

The choice comes down to:

The Complete Speed Kills DVD Program at $64.80 to $79.80 USD, depending on how many DVDs you purchase at a time, or a local instructor at $520.

Guarantee

You can return the DVDs for any reason within 60 days of receipt for a 100% money back refund.

The Bottom Line

Let me see. Do I recommend the inexpensive, advanced speed technique video guitar lesson DVD series that is taught by Michael Angelo Batio, the fastest guitar player in the world, who just happens to be incredibly entertaining? You bet I do. In a heart beat. Speed Kills is truly a must have advanced electric guitar lesson course for anyone that is in serious pursuit of lead guitar excellence.

Many budding guitarists fall for a deceptive claim that learning how to play the guitar is easy. Of course, such a claim depends upon how one defines the word “easy.” I have been playing guitar for over 20 years. I learned how to play like millions of other guitarists. I took formal guitar lessons for several years. I can assure you that I have never been able to find easy guitar lessons.

What Are Formal Guitar Lessons?

Formal guitar lessons consist in a guitar teacher imparting his or her knowledge of playing guitar upon a student. The effectiveness of the guitar lessons depend in large part upon the quality of the guitar teacher. Naturally, the beginning guitar student must have a strong desire to learn.

There are many guitar instructors, so called, that try to teach people how to play guitar for a fee. Unfortunately for someone looking for easy guitar lessons, an incompetent guitar teacher might make a new student believe that guitar mastery is a couple months, or even weeks away.

An ineffective guitar teaching method is obvious when the teacher focuses on performing for the student, rather than teaching the basics from which the student can build upon. Over the course of a few short weeks and months, the new student becomes an ex-student. I cannot begin to tell you how many people I run into that tell me they took guitar lessons for a couple months and then quit.

The Components of Excellent Formal Guitar Instruction

Before I get started on this subject, let me assume that you are not looking to become a performing classical guitarist. If your aspirations are to play in a classic orchestra such as the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, then you will need to enroll in an accredited music school. I am guessing though, that you want to play some popular music tunes. Okay, with that out of the way, what are the components of excellent formal guitar instruction?

1. Hire a Professional Guitar Instructor

Your guitar teacher should be someone who has earned a music degree from an accredited college or university. You definitely should not take guitar lessons from someone who is self-taught. Just because a guitarist can play “Eruption” by Van Halen does not mean they can teach you how to play guitar. Therefore, I recommend that you take formal guitar lessons from an instructor affiliated with a reputable music store. I have found that some of the best guitar instructors work out of family owned music shops, not chain stores.

2. You Need To Be Dedicated

If your guitar instructor does not demand that you practice at the very least, one half hour per day, then you are not going to adequately develop as a guitarist. Mastering the guitar takes years of practice and learning. If you plan on taking guitar lessons just to learn one or two songs you happen to like, you will never learn those songs or any others. Be realistic about your ability to devote the time and effort needed to really learn how to be a good guitarist.

3. Your Guitar Instructor Must Be Demanding

A demanding guitar teacher is very essential. I am not saying the person must be mean or cruel, but there are certain standards in regards to proper posture and fingering. If you find that your guitar teacher is constantly correcting your posture and repeatedly telling you to use the tips of your fingers, then you have a real gem of a teacher. As a beginner, I cannot tell you how many times my first guitar teacher told me to change position, use the tips of my fingers, and to “do it again” until I got it right. You might not like being told over and over to readjust your body or replay a certain guitar part, but it is well worth it.

4. The Basics of Guitar Music Theory

Despite your worst fears as a beginning guitarist, you will need to learn some music theory in order to understand how music works. The guitar is a complicated instrument because of the immense diversity of musical options on the fretboard. The guitar is what I would consider a 3-dimensional instrument. Whereas, the piano is a 1-dimensional instrument. Why? All the notes on a piano are in a straight line.

Now, effective guitar instruction will teach you how to read music. Yes, reading tabs is fast and easy, but it does nothing for helping you understand the musical structure of a song. You can be assured that music theory for guitar is not at all difficult. You just need to focus a little bit. Remember, this is not classical concert guitar school. Learn it and move on. You will find that music theory is an aid to being great on guitar.

5. Do Not Expect To Be Jamming Immediately

You have to learn to crawl before you can walk. And, you have to learn to walk before you can run. You will have to play “Tom Dooley” and “Streets of Laredo” before you can play “Dust In The Wind.” There is no way around it. If your first lesson as a beginning guitarist is to learn how to play a contemporary rock guitar solo, then you will be an ex-guitar student very soon. You must be persistent until you are able to play some more difficult tunes. You will eventually walk and then run. Give it time and practice.

Guitar Lessons Are Expensive

If you cannot afford in-person formal guitar instruction, there are some wonderful options available to you. Distance learning via the internet has taken the world by storm. Some online instruction programs are excellent. I have looked at some of these and find the quality of the teachers to be top notch. Also, the educational materials that accompany the lessons are comprehensive. The only drawback is that you are left to your own devices, which might be a problem.

A solution would be to perhaps take an in-person guitar lesson every so often to make sure you are on the right track and not developing any bad habits in terms of form and method. But, it is possible to learn how to play the guitar from a very good online instruction program.

So you want to play guitar? Guitar lessons, in some form or another, are a necessity for anyone wanting to learn to play the guitar. Established players also rely on guitar lessons to acquire new skills and move up to the next level. Finding the right lesson, course, or product sounds simple, but there are so many choices available that it’s a tough task to figure out what’s best for your individual needs. These guidelines will help you sort through your options and make a good decision.

Guitar Lessons- Private Instructor or Online?

The traditional way of learning guitar is by taking private lessons from a guitar teacher. The student typically meets with the instructor once a week for 30 minutes at a cost of about $15-25 per week. This is certainly a great option, and perhaps the best way to learn to play: under the personal guidance of a dedicated teacher. However, in many cases private lessons are not a good option due to the time, cost, and transportation factors involved.

The good news for guitar players is that there is a wide range of alternatives to private instruction. Guitar lesson and instructional books have been a mainstay for years. Technology developments then brought us lessons in the form of videotapes and DVDs, as well as multimedia software programs to run on the PC.

Today, widespread access to the internet has caused a major revolution in guitar instruction methods and availability. Now an abundance (some might say over-abundance!) of information on various guitar lesson choices is available in minutes through your favorite search engine. The array of choices is staggering, ranging from free online guitar lessons, to high-end distance learning guitar instruction leading to a certificate from Berklee College of Music,

Aside from better visibility into the options, there have also been tremendous advances in the technology used to develop and deliver the instructional material. Interactive video lessons in which the student controls the pace of learning and the tempo of the material are a good example of this. Online guitar lessons and products can be accessed immediately on the Web, either on-demand or downloaded to the local PC. This gives great flexibility on when and where to learn.

Guitar Lessons Options

Aside from private lessons, there are three basic formats of guitar lessons and instructional material.

Books- If you’re on a budget and like the idea of the portability of a book, this may be the way to go for you. Books often come with a CD to provide audio tracks. Typical Cost: $15-25

Video-based lessons- In my experience, pure video-based lessons are a good “icing on the cake” to help you learn, but not typically a good foundational guitar lesson program. They often lack supporting learning materials needed to be effective for baseline learning.

Multimedia Online Lessons- The Web, plus advances in the technology for creating learning material such as video, has really opened the door to some great multimedia guitar lesson programs.. These can be delivered and accessed on several ways: downloaded for use on your PC; accessed directly from your PC with a live web connection, or as a physical CD/DVD that you run on your PC.

Sorting through the many options can be made easier with information dedicated to this topic on various guitar websites, such as this online guitar lessons guide.

Wrap-up

For those wanting to learn to play guitar, or to play better, there is no better time than now to take advantage to the available online guitar lesson and learning options. The realm of guitar instruction is certainly one that has benefited from the Internet!
